Aputure Electro Storm CS15 Firmware Adds Dynamic Fan Control for Quieter Sets

For studio crews, that is the relevant specification—not a new output figure, but a change in how a high-output LED behaves when the microphone is live.

Aputure also says the update adds five lighting FX presets for studio environments. The supplied announcement does not state firmware version, fan-noise metrics, output changes, or whether Dynamic Fan Control alters thermal or photometric performance. Those tolerances need checking on the fixture.

Dynamic Fan Control: test it under sync-sound conditions

The useful question is not whether the fan is “quiet.” It is whether its operating behavior stays acceptable at the actual fixture-to-mic distance, in the actual room, at the required exposure.

Run a controlled comparison before placing the CS15 on a dialogue setup:

• Record room tone with the fixture inactive, then with it operating under the required lighting condition.
• Keep the mic position, gain, shutter setting, lens aperture and fixture placement fixed.
• Monitor for shifts in fan behavior during the take, not only immediately after power-up.
• Check the result with the fixture at the working level required for the scene, rather than at an arbitrary bench setting.

Aputure’s wording is limited to minimizing noise during quiet takes. It is not a published acoustic measurement. Treat the feature as a workflow option until it is verified against the production’s sound threshold.

Five added FX presets, but no preset list

The update also introduces five new lighting FX presets for studio environments. Aputure has not identified those effects in the supplied material, nor specified their parameter ranges, timing controls, output behavior, or interaction with the new fan mode.

That leaves a straightforward prep task: update one unit first and inspect the preset menu before loading the look into a shoot file or lighting board workflow. Confirm that the available controls produce repeatable results at camera exposure, particularly where the effect is intended to run through a long take.

Do not build a cue around an unnamed preset based on the announcement alone. The fixture’s menu is the only useful confirmation.

What to verify before deployment

The CS15 update is operationally relevant for controlled sets with close microphones and fixtures working in the same room. But the announcement currently supplies no hard benchmark: no dB figure, no stated output trade-off, no thermal limit, and no detail on control behavior.

The validation sequence is binary:

• If Dynamic Fan Control meets the production’s sound requirement at the needed lighting level, enable it for sync-sound configurations.
• If the fan behavior or exposure result does not meet that requirement, treat the update as an optional feature, not a production solution.

That is the correct threshold. A firmware label is not a metric.
